Khalanga is a busy town in the far-western part of Nepal’s Darchula District. It’s nestled among the beautiful Himalayan mountains. The town is important because it’s where the district’s main offices are. People from different backgrounds live here, making it a lively place with many cultures.
Even though it’s not very big, Khalanga is bustling with farming and trading activities, especially with India nearby. It’s located by the Kali River, which not only helps with trade but also gives stunning views of the mountains.
Khalanga has basic things like roads and electricity, and it’s a friendly place for visitors who want to explore the natural beauty and adventures of Darchula District. Nepalese people can enter India through this gateway without any difficulties.
Malikarjun Temple
The Malikarjun Temple is a significant religious site located in Darchula District of Nepal. Situated in the town of Khalanga, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, one of the principal deities in Hinduism.
The Malikarjun Temple is a sacred place where people worship idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. In this temple, Malika represents Parbati, while Arjun symbolizes Shiva. Every year, especially during the months of Ashadh and Kartik in the Nepali calendar, devotees come here to offer prayers and seek blessings.
The Gaura Festival, a significant celebration, also takes place here, attracting many residents of Darchula. One notable aspect of this temple is the pilgrimage journey undertaken by devotees, who walk a long distance to reach this holy site. Due to its religious importance and the pilgrimage tradition, the Malikarjun Temple holds a special place in the hearts of people in the Darchula District.
Mount Api Trek
The API Mountain Trek in Darchula is an amazing journey for people who love exploring the stunning mountains of Nepal.
The API Mountain, towering high at 7,132 meters, is the main attraction of this trek. The trek usually starts from Khalanga town in Darchula District and follows many trails leading to the base camp of API Mountain. Along the way, trekkers come across lovely forests, winding rivers, and old mountain villages, giving them a real taste of life in the Himalayas.
Since the trek is tough and far away from cities, it’s best for experienced trekkers who have the right gear and a guide who knows the area well. But for those who dare to take on the challenge, the API Mountain Trek promises an unforgettable adventure in the mesmerizing landscapes of Nepal’s far-western region.
Gateway to India
The Mahakali River acts as the border between Nepal and India. A suspension bridge links the towns on both sides. People from Nepal and India can cross the border freely during the day, but it’s closed at night for safety. If Nepali people want to buy things from India, they can, but they have to pass through customs checkpoints on both sides of the border.
Mahakali River
The Mahakali River flows through Darchula, a district in the far-western region of Nepal. It starts in a place called Kalapani, near the Lipulekh Pass in the Himalayas. This area is where Nepal, India, and China (Tibet) meet. The river flows down to the south, making a border between Nepal and the Indian state called Uttarakhand. It goes through the rough land of Nepal until it meets another river called Ghaghara in India. Finally, it joins with the big river called the Ganges.
This river plays a crucial role in the lives of the local population, providing water for irrigation, transportation, and other daily needs.

CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES
Even though Darchula is beautiful, it faces some problems. The roads and electricity need to be better, and many people don’t have enough money. Even though the road is Black Pitched, it is very much congested to drive through the road. But the view is very outstanding. But there are chances to make things better by improving these things and helping people get a good education and healthcare.
Most people in Darchula grow crops like rice, maize, and wheat, and some raise animals like yaks. But it’s not easy because the roads and electricity are not very good. People are working on finding new ways to make money, like tourism and making electricity from water.
CONCLUSION
Darchula District is a special place in Nepal, full of adventure and beauty. Even though it has some challenges, there’s hope for a brighter future. By working together and taking care of this amazing place, we can make sure Darchula shines for many years to come.
